Stretching along five blissful miles of Bali's southern coast, Canggu has escaped some of the frenetic development elsewhere on the island and features some of its finest surfing beaches.
Canggu is a superb place to surf, and surfers make up most of its regular visitors. Beaches like Echo Beach and Berawa suit experienced and novice surfers alike.
Test your skills on the Greg Norman-designed Nirwana Bali Golf Course or take to the saddle at Umalas Stables and ride along the beaches.
Sometimes it seems like Balinese culture is being suffocated by tourism, but not in Canggu, where you can stroll through ancient rice paddies, buy freshly landed lobster, and snap up handcrafted artworks from local communities.
Canggu is a place to get away from it all, whether you are reclining on the beach, taking yoga classes at Serenity Eco Guesthouse or indulging in massage at the Therapy Spa.
Seminyak is a bustling nightlife hub, and it's around 15 miles away from Canggu. By staying in the resort, you can be close enough to party, but distant enough to avoid the vacationing hordes.
On the island of Bali, you will find one of the most famous spots around - Kuta. It is arguably the best-known tourist getaway in Bali, mostly because of the long, broad Kuta Beach, with pristine, white sand and turquoise-blue waters, which makes for a surfer's paradise. Previously known as a modest fishing village, it has become a tourist hub, boasting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Engage your family in fun-filled activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and boating on the beach. If pushy vendors begin to bother you as you're soaking up the sun, move north along the beach to Legian, Seminyak, or Petitenget for a quieter experience.
Situated at the center of Tanah Lot and Seminyak, Canggu Beach is a coastal village and an up-and-coming resort area. You'll definitely love the spectacular view of the sunset from the beach as you take a slow stroll on the sand. If you're not a surfer, you can relax and take a seat on the enormous volcanic rock by the ocean. In the evening, wind up your day with live musical performances with delicious food to go with it. Families and couples alike can spend time with one another in the latest restaurants, bars, surf camps, and a host of other attractive places.
Situated on Petitenget Beach, Bali, Petienget Temple is an ancient Hindu structure. Explore the not-so-big temple for the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle that Kuta has to offer. The structure, which is a couple of centuries old, is a functional temple to the locals, who refer to it as 'Pura Petitenget'. Enjoy the serene relaxing tropic surrounding of Petitenget, whose location is at the center of a jungle that once existed there. Especially at sunset, steal a picturesque view of the beach and the sun as it sets on the horizon.
Located in downtown Kuta, this exciting water park will get your adrenaline pumping. Its various water slides and attractions ensure no one is left out. The smallest kids will have a blast on supervised rides specifically designed for them. Take it easy on the leisurely float down the Lazy River or defy gravity in wild rides like the Twin racer, Superbowl and Boomerang. Have fun on the Constrictor, one of the world's longest waterslides, and experience dramatic twists and turns on the Python.
After Kuta, Legian Beach is another famous area with tons of tourists flooding in every single day. This amazing turnout is attributed to the lively parties, extravagant beach life, and best of all, the enjoyable nightlife. All this, of course, is not complete without the white sandy beach. Relax on the warm sand with sunscreen on your skin and let the sun do its thing. Alternatively, you can take a leisurely walk in the evening, spend the night in a lively club and finally... well, the rest is up to you!

Canggu has a diverse dining scene. One must-see place is the Deus Ex Machina "Temple of Enthusiasm," where fine food is coupled with a party vibe. But for a higher class of meal, head to Echo Beach for the seafront seafood, Warung Varuna for Indonesian specialties, or Taco Casa for fine Mexican fare. Expect meals to cost around Rp100,000.
Climate-wise, the best time to visit Bali is just before "high" season. From April to June, the weather will be dry and the crowds will be building up, but not too large.
Denpasar International Airport (DPS) is probably the best airport to aim for and is about half an hour's drive from Canggu. Taxis will cost around Rp140,000.
Follow Jl. Legian north from Denpasar Airport, followed by Jl. Raya Kerobokan, then Jalan Batu Belig, which runs down to the beaches at Canggu.
There are no scheduled buses to Canggu from Kuta or Denpasar, but you can catch hotel shuttles to the larger resorts.
Echo Beach - nothing to do with the famous hit single, Echo Beach is a popular surfing spot, with sublime sunsets and seafood shacks lining its seafront.
Berawa Beach - another seminal surfing spot, Berawa's rocky reefs ensure that the breaks are lively enough to test even the most skilled board riders.
Canggu Village - set along a couple of streets that descend to the sea, Canggu features attractions like the Taman Segara Madu water park and plenty of places to dine.
Public transport is thin on the ground in Canggu, so most visitors rely on scooters, taxis, or rental cars.
Expect taxis to charge around Rp7,000 for the meter drop, followed by around Rp10,000 per mile.
Nearby car rental outlets include CV. Milky Way Car Rental and Bali Car Rental. Rates are around Rp250,000 per day.
Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong is the main shopping street, home to surf shops like Billabong and Flow and Yonder. House of Alaia is also a great spot to find homemade artisanal jewelry.
Nearby supermarkets include Pepito Market and Alive Wholefood Store. As an indicator, expect 12 eggs to cost around Rp15,000.
