Calling all coffee lovers! We all know that Melbourne has pretty amazing coffee. The Melbourne International Coffee Expo happens next month (22nd – 24th March), a brewtiful event which coffee connoisseurs and lovers of Melbourne coffee should not miss.
To help get you prepared, we’ve found you some of the best brews Melbourne has to offer so that neither you nor your Instagram feed has to miss out on that perfect (and pretty!) cup of coffee.
For fancy-pants coffee aficionados: Industry Beans
Founded by two brothers in 2010, this coffee mecca serves a variety of coffees, from espresso and pour-overs to aeropresses, cold drips and cold brew. Keep your eyes peeled for their seasonal menu, which includes delicious brunch dishes. Their expert baristas keep things fresh, tasty and creative, including their coffee bubble cup, which consists of a single origin cold drip, consoy (their special combo of condensed milk and soy milk) and coffee-soaked tapioca pearls, similar to bubble tea. Our favourite for Instagram is their affogato, which uses the Fitzroy Street Blend, poured over a soft and creamy espresso-flavoured Billy Van Creamy ice cream. All the packaging used for takeaways is sustainably sourced and fully compostable, and you will get a 30 cent discount if you purchase a drink with a reusable cup.
Address: Warehouse 3, 62 Rose Street, Fitzroy

For on-the-go coffees: Axil Coffee Roasters CBD Espresso Bar
Nestled in the heart of Melbourne CBD is Axil Coffee Roasters Espresso Bar. This small, stylish space is the perfect spot for anyone short on time. The barristers take pride in their beans, rotating their selection to offer customers the experience to try a diverse range of flavours from a variety of origins. From the Guatemalan mountains to the jungles of Colombia, your brew will always be a pleasant surprise. With multiple locations across the city, you’re always in reach of an Axil coffee but we recommend heading to the Hawthorn HQ, its flagship cafe and roasting facility.

For the perfect Instagram shot: Acoffee
Acoffee is a great spot for any budding photographer looking for the perfect balance between delicious coffee and the perfect Instagram shot, especially if dark roasts aren’t your flavour of choice. Here, the Director of Coffee, Byoung Woo Kang, lightly roasts the beans for a more subtle taste. As an Instagrammers’ favourite, Acoffee has perfectly mastered the art of ‘less is more’, with its crisp white walls in a simplistic industrial building, making it the dream backdrop for your coffee ritual. Opening its doors at 7 am on weekdays, you can pick up your morning coffee on the way to work or spend a little more time over your brew on a lazy Saturday.

For something a little different: White Mojo
With a black bejewelled decorative cow’s head mounted on the wall, you know this cafe is Insta-worthy as soon as you walk in the door. With aromatic house-blended Sumatran coffee made from a mix of naturally dried and washed beans, we wouldn’t blame you for wanting to stick with your usual coffee order. But if you fancy being a little adventurous, White Mojo also has a great matcha or black sesame latte to try. Try ordering the sesame latte with the cauliflower pannacotta which arrives under a glass dome, that when lifted, releases a plume of smoke. Make sure you time it right for a slow-mo on your Insta Story!

For scientific coffee drinkers: Sensory Lab
The geniuses at Sensory Lab are known for being extremely serious about their coffee so get ready for a real experience. They roast, sell and serve their own beans, usually with around six roasts on offer at one time. With an ever-changing menu, there’s always a new blend to explore, and the baristas are quick to answer any coffee question you might have. With two locations, one being tucked in the David Jones near the food hall, we recommend heading to the arcade at 30 Collins Street. Here, they have iPads dotted around the seating so that you can drink your coffee while browsing the latest news.

For those with a sweet tooth: Hash
If you’re not a coffee fan, don’t despair, Melbourne also has some pretty good alternatives. One of the most famous hot chocolates in the city can be found at Hash. It’s not any ordinary hot chocolate though. This is made with 80% dark chocolate, poured onto home-spun candy floss which melts as soon as the chocolate hits it. It might be a little messy, but the result is something so rich and creamy, you’ll never go back to drinking ordinary hot chocolate again. We only have one word to describe the whole experience: bliss.
