Port Stephens offers a wide range of activities for tourists and residents alike; from diving in marine parks to snorkelling to cruising the waters to observe the magnificent sea creatures; not forgetting Stockton Beach, which remains one of the region’s masterpieces. There’s quite a lot to do and see. You’ll need a perfect set of wheels to exhaustingly explore Port Stephens, especially if you plan to spend most of your time in the downtown area. If you hire a good car with great mileage, you can go almost anywhere conveniently and with ease. If you’ll be staying at Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay, you might not need a vehicle to visit the beach, since the towns are quite small and the local surfing and bay beaches are a mere walking distance from the city centre. Nonetheless, if you’ll be staying at Corlette or Peppers Anchorage, you’ll likely need a car. You’ll definitely reap more from your trip if you hire a car, since public transport can be inconvenient.
Port Stephens is only about a half-hour drive from Newcastle Williamtown Airport (NTL), approximately a 1 hour drive from Newcastle and about 2h 30min from Sydney. Roads in Port Stephens are well maintained but a four-wheel drive (4WD) can be a great choice if you’ll be navigating the less travelled areas, such as Samurai Beach. You can then head on to Stockton and Birubi Beach, which is roughly 20min away by car. A drive to Worimi National Park, Stockton (about a 32 km stretch) and later to Birubi Beach is a popular route for tourists. Drive your vehicle across the sand dunes and slide along with the receding tide at Worimi National Park. After exploring the sand dunes on your hired ride, why not head over to the Hunter Valley and sample some of the country’s best wines and dishes in the nearby towns? As you head back, why not stop at the Gan Gan Lookout for a view of the Port Stephens province and the ocean beyond?
You must be at least 21 years old to hire a car in Port Stephens. However, some Port Stephens car hire companies only hire certain types of vehicles to drivers under 25 years old, while others apply a surcharge to young drivers aged between 21 and 24. You should be extra careful to avoid nasty surprises involving costs, since policies differ from dealer to dealer.
